CALL TO THE ‘PEN

Chad Qualls, not Luke Gregerson, got the call in a save situation on Thursday for the Astros. Qualls got the job done with a perfect inning, notching his fourth save. Gregerson picked up a save on Wednesday, but he was away from the team on Thursday tending to the same family emergency that kept him out last weekend. He will return Friday and is not expected to need another absence. … The Rays activated Jake McGee (elbow) after Thursday’s game. It’s still unclear if McGee, who allowed just two hits during six scoreless innings on his rehab assignement, will take over the closer job or if Brad Boxberger will remain in that role. Given that McGee’s a lefty and Boxberger is a righty, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see this become a platoon situation. … Dodgers’ manager Don Mattingly indicated on Thursday that Kenley Jansen (foot) will be activated from the disabled list on either Friday or Saturday, with Saturday being more likely. Mattingly has already said that Jansen won’t immediately return to closing, but it shouldn’t take long before the big righty is back in the ninth inning, especially after Yimi Garcia blew another save chance on Thursday. … Sean Doolittle (shoulder) allowed two solo homers during his first rehab appearance on Thursday. He also struck out two batters. Doolittle will need several more appearances before he’s ready to return to game action, though it’s unclear if he’ll step right back into the closer’s role upon activation.

WEATHER WATCH

There’s a 50-percent chance of rain in St. Louis for the Tigers-Cardinals (50), but they’ll do their best to get that game in because it’s an interleague affair. The Yankees-Royals (46-percent chance of rain), Giants-Reds (40), and Indians-Rangers (39) could also see some showers.
